Julian Vereker is just that.
In the late 60's, while making recordings for friends, he found the sound that he could achieve to be disappointing. Flying in the face of the existing belief that electronics all sounded the same, he began experimenting with different designs and in 1971 released the first Naim Audio amplifier, sold only to friends and acquaintances.
In 1974, after moving his facility into a larger shop in Salisbury, he met Ivor Tiefenbrum of Linn Turntables. Working together, they were able to prove by demonstration alone, that products did in fact differ greatly and that loudspeakers were not the final arbiters of sound.
In 1973 Naim launched their first consumer product, the NAP 200 power amplifier. Preamplifiers, Integrated Amplifiers and CD Players followed. In 1991 born of his passion for music and great sound quality, he started Naim Records.
The evolution continued with the Statement electronics, Mu-So and Uniti products joining the line-up.
Though he succumbed to cancer at the young age of 55, the multi-talented "amateur" left a legacy of an exceptional audio company with a bright future ahead.
