Start small, become famous. That’s the American dream. This time, it’s the German dream. AMG officially released their first product less than ten years ago but have become world-renown for their turntables and tonearms. They don’t make many but it’s their attention to detail that has earned them justified praise.
A father and son team in a town north of Munich, near the Danube, had been manufacturing precision parts for the aerospace industry and then German turntable manufacturers. In 2009, they produced the first turntable of their own. Expertise with CAD and CNC machines as well as customized lathes and drill presses gave them a singular capability to design and build precision turntables. The Viella, with its 12" tonearm, debuted at the 2010 Munich High End Show.
The company that was later to become the US distributor was surprised to discover that there was no singular turntable brand in Germany. All of the principals met in 2011 and established AMG... Audio Manufaktur Germany. Advancements in the design continued and they formed relationships with manufacturers of tonearm cables and isolation bases, furthering the clarity of the sound and solidity of the design. The Viella 12 had its first official showing at the 2012 CES where it established itself as a world class product, a reputation that continues to grow stronger. Other models followed as well as other tonearms and phono cartridges. In a few short years AMG has gone from a virtual unknown to a global leader of masterfully produced vinyl playback hardware. It's a great story.
