Tinkering. It's wonderful how much good has come from it in the audio world.
In the mid '80's, a group of music lovers/engineers began an unplanned two-year project trying to improve the edgy, unsatisfying sound of CD's; marketed at the time as "Perfect Sound Forever." Though it was a part-time endeavor, they dove deep. They examined the parts quality in most players, the level of manufacturing and possibly most importantly, human hearing and perception. As a result, they correlated design changes with improvements in sound.
The first 'product' that came from their hard work was a seriously ugly, three-box contraption consisting of a power supply, a transport and a processing unit which was the first to use Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in a potential consumer application. The Theta Digital DS Pre, released in 1988 was the first DSP-based outboard DAC on the market. Theta Digital has never stopped innovating and continues to manufacture cutting-edge digital hardware.
The Theta symbol is used in many disciplines; mathematics, meteorology, pharmacology and others. In audio it famously represents a dedication to quality sound.
